The HOFTS-PBBTC uses SETPRO's new Power Baseball Trainer Computer (PBBTC).

The SETPRO SPRT5A has been the mainstay training computer for almost 10 years. It utilizes a proprietary optical sensing system to "look for" the tip of the bat. In order to see the tip of the bat a reflective strip must be attached to the end of the bat. The SPRT5A is then set up in such a manner that it can see the tip of the bat. This requires the SPRT5A to be set up almost directly opposite the hitter at a height that will allow the SPRT5A to "see" the tip of the bat. The advantages of an optical system i.e. a system that "looks for" the tip of the bat is that the player must take a controlled swing. The reason for this is because the sensing zone ( the area that the tip of the bat must pass through) is quite narrow. The advantage of this is that when a player is taking dry training swings (for example with POWERFINS) the player must be able to control the bat i.e. cannot just take wild swings. Because of the sensitivity of the optical system, set up becomes very critical for proper operation. For dry swing training this is usually not a problem. But if you are attempting to use the tee in conjunction with the SPRT5A, care must be taken to adjust the location of the as SPRT5A for accurate results.This is especially true if you're using the SPRT5A to measure bat speed when hitting a ball off the tee. The SPRT5A must be positioned so that the tip of the bat passes through the front of the sensors BEFORE the bat strikes the ball. This allows the SPRT5A to very accurately measure the speed of the bat just prior to contact. The SPRT5A also uses a separate trigger unit which is typically placed behind the net it is being used with devices such as hitting off the tee into a net or a SoloHitter.

The new SETPRO Power Baseball Training Computer is a result of 10 years of baseball training systems development. it utilizes a proprietary Doppler radar to measure the movement of the bat. The SETPRO Power Baseball Training Computer is exceptionally easy to use as it integrates all of the functions of the is SPRT5A (including reaction training) into a single unit. Because the SETPRO Power Baseball Training Computer utilizes radar, it is much more forgiving in terms of location of the unit with respect to the player. The only real requirement is that the SETPRO Power Baseball Training Computer be located directly in front of the player. Typically this would be approximately 6-10 feet away and located at a height approximately equal to the contact point/height of the bat/ball. The SETPRO Power Baseball Training Computer does a very good job of measuring dry swings. Its real strength is its ability to measure the speed of the ball coming off the bat when used with a TEE or SoloHiitter. The SETPRO Power Baseball Training Computer contains all of the training functions found in the SPRT5A with the convenience of everything contained in a single unit. Another important advantage of the SETPRO Par Baseball Training Computer is that it can be also used for throw training development. And that most of the same functions for swing training a directly applicable to throw training development.

I have known Paul Nyman for approximately 3 years. My first encounter with him was at a pitching seminar where he described many of the methodologies that he currently uses to train pitchers. At first, Paul's techniques seemed radical and misplaced in what I knew/believed to be "true" in the world of baseball. After a 2 hour discussion with him at the opening of an elevator door, his techniques and methodologies seemed less radical and more appealing than before, and my sense of what was "true" in baseball became less believable. At best, Paul will change the way you coach and train throwers. At the very least, Paul will make you think about the way you coach and train throwers! Baseball needs more Paul Nyman's, that is to say, out of the box thinkers/practitioners who do not adhere to the "that's the way it has always been done in baseball" mentality.

PBBTWT1 A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Swing Training and High-Level Hitting Performance. SETPRO was the first emphasize the importance of swing quickness in combination with bat speed. The problem being that bat speed does not necessarily correlate to swing quickness. Major-league hitters have developed combination of both swing quickness AND bat speed. A true measure of swing quickness is the time it takes from initial front foot contact with the ground until bat ball contact. Up until now there has been no way to measure this. The SETPRO SPRT5A reaction trainer was the first breakthrough for developing swing quickness through its proprietary reaction and anticipation training capabilities. The SETPRO SpeedTracX-RQ extended this capability (reaction and anticipation training) by measuring not only bat speed but the ability to measure speed of the ball coming off the bat when hitting off of the tee. Both of these units measured what would be called total swing movement time. Total swing movement time being the time it takes to respond (reaction time) combined with the total movement time (loading and unloading) of the swing. With high-level hitters loading time is variable depending upon the type of pitch (speed, location, movement), but unloading time does not change appreciably unless the batter is completely fooled by the pitch at which time he will "disconnect" and uses hands to trying to the ball. One of the best examples of players who exhibit the ability to vary their loading time but maintain constant unloading time i.e. swing quickness and bat speed is Alex Rodriguez. The problem that faces many young players is that they can generate bat speed but at the expense of the length of time it takes them to generate this bat speed i.e. unloading time. For years of observation and experiment it's been found that the true measure of unloading time is the time it takes from front foot "bracing up" on the ground until bat-ball contact. SETPRO has developed a "Weight Sensor" in conjunction with the Power Baseball Trainer to measure how long it takes for the actual swing to take place. Differences as small as 1/100 seconds in swing time can be measured accurately and repeatedly. This information is available in all modes of operation including Ballistic Overload Training (BOT), Ballistic Overload Failure (BOF), Maximum Learning Transfer (MLT), Swing Training, Reaction Training and Anticipation Training modes of operation.
